What is valerian?

Valerian, scientifically named valeriana officinalis, is a very famous medicinal plant in Europe.

In fact, it has been used since Antiquity to combat sleep disorders, but also to reduce stress and anxiety. During this period, valerian was particularly recommended by Greek doctors, such as Galen and Hippocrates.

To treat various disorders, herbal medicine uses the rhizome of valerian. Its rhizome is notably composed of different active ingredients, such as valerenic acid, glutamine, valerenal, but also valepotriates including valtrate and isovaltrate.

Origin and method of manufacture

Valerian is one of the best-known medicinal plants in Europe. It grows naturally in temperate zones, especially where the soils are cool and humid.

Increasingly used by the world population, valerian is also cultivated in countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, or even in the United States and others.

For its use in different forms (powders, capsules, infusions, or even tablets) the valerian rhizome is harvested during the fall, washed, cut, and then left to dry before being transformed into the forms that the we know.

Valerian is reserved for adults and children over 12 years old.

For your health and safety, do not exceed the recommended daily doses.

To make it easier to fall asleep and contribute to better quality sleep, it is recommended to take 3 capsules, preferably at least 30 minutes before bedtime.

If you want to take a valerian treatment to combat stress, take 2 to 3 capsules at dinner time, or at bedtime.

Contraindications and adverse effects

In pregnant or breastfeeding women, studies carried out on valerian have not demonstrated any toxicity for the baby, but it is still preferable not to consume this plant during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

In addition, the use of valerian is also strongly discouraged in children under 12 years old.

If you suffer from liver problems, or if you take medications or herbs that can damage your liver, do not take valerian.

Do not take valerian either if you are taking sleeping pills, antiepileptics, antidepressants, neuroleptics, or even painkillers derived from opium or antihistamines. In addition, this plant could also interact with anticoagulant treatments.

Always seek the advice of your doctor before using valerian capsules.

Side and/or undesirable effects

As valerian has a sedative effect, it is very dangerous to consume it before driving or using machines and tools, which can thus lead to a sharp reduction in alertness, and therefore the risk of serious accidents.

Other rare side effects or unwanted effects that may occur include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, or dizziness. These are quite rare.

Prolonged consumption of valerian (more than 8 weeks) is not recommended in order to fully feel the effects of the treatment, although the latter can only cause addiction effects in very rare cases (prolonged use greater than 6 months for example). ).

Please allow one to two weeks between each treatment.
